What Should I Book? River Cruise vs Ocean Cruise

What is the difference between the two? This question becomes more frequent as the opportunities for River Cruises continue to grow. Size, of course, is a difference with ocean cruises boasting roughly 3,000 passengers per cruise versus 200 or less for river cruises.  To capture the benefits of both, let’s do a side by side comparison.

Destinations

Ocean Cruises: The Pacific Islands, the Caribbean, Mediterranean Ports, Asia, or Alaska to name a few.

River Cruises: Popular European and US destinations such as the Danube or Rhine rivers in Europe or the mighty Mississippi in the United States.

Excursions

Ocean Cruises: Excursions from ocean cruises tend to be large and awe-inspiring.  ATV trips through the jungle, seeing ice flows in Antarctica. There are some exceptions in the form of trips to the beach or walking about town.

River Cruises: Shore excursions are generally included in your cruise price.  They are smaller in scale than an ocean cruise and more personal.  You will most likely be on a walking or bike tour with a local guide.  Headsets are provided on walking tours so you can always hear your guide and enjoy that bit of local culture.

Entertainment and Amenities

Ocean Cruises: There are many restaurants offering a wide variety of food.  Entertainment on the ship is focused on being very thrilling and glamorous.  You will enjoy Broadway shows, indoor skydiving, water parks, 4-d movie theaters, and much more.

River Cruises: There is usually one dining room for a more close and familial type experience where wine is included.  There will be libraries, sundecks, and coffee bars as well.  As with the excursions, the entertainment onboard a river cruise is less “glitzy” than the ocean cruise. You will enjoy some shows, craft demos, folk dances, and other more local activities, a great cultural experience.

Service

The real difference between the two types of cruise is the size of the ship and type of service you receive.  The river cruise is a smaller and more intimate experience.  Crew members are able to remember your name and offer you personalized service you will not find on an ocean cruise of thousands of passengers.
